Mary and Mathew went to St. John, and all they brought us was this stupid Sangria…

It’s true, we did go to the Caribbean without you.  But, this is some darn good sangria, so I hope you won’t mind too much.  My brother John and his girlfriend Kelly went to Spain during their study abroad in Prague last year, and shared enough pitchers of sangria that they were able to get the recipe from the bartender.  After tinkering with it a bit, they were able to recreate something that was more or less as they remembered.  It’s potent stuff, but mighty tasty for happy hour or for late night card playing, and we enjoyed it for both last week.  (You can see a few pictures from our trip here.  John took many more, and he promises me he’ll get them up on his flickr account before too long you can see some of them here.)  It’s back to the real world for now, but we’re hoping to find an excuse to share a pitcher again soon.  Come and join us?

Sangria

We used the cheapest red wine we could find for this, and I think it’s just as well. After all, you’re going to add orange soda to it!

1 bottle red wine (we used Cabernet Sauvignon, but I have no idea what’s traditional)
1/4 c Cognac
1/4 c Cointreau
1/4 c gin
1/2 c orange soda
1-2 T sugar (to taste)
1 orange
1 lemon
1 lime

Combine wine, liquors, orange soda, and sugar in a pitcher. Cut the citrus into half moon slices and add to the pitcher. Serve chilled. Keeps fine for at least a day or two. Makes 6-8 glasses.

Warning: If enjoyed too thoroughly, embarrassing pictures may be taken and shared:
